June Newsletter: Important Updates from Peace Corps Commemorative Foundation

Dear Supporters,
It’s so exciting to see Peace Corps Park on its way to becoming a reality, as the Peace Corps community rallies around this monumental initiative. I’m so gratified to be leading the campaign, working alongside stalwart board directors and volunteers that give generously of their time, talent, and resources to advance our cause.
Thanks to your robust response to our outreach, we have already surpassed the milestone of $2 million in funds raised toward our goal of $10 million. With fresh funds to support our ongoing work, we are moving ahead on the final design for Peace Corps Park, based on the design concept approved in November 2021 by the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts and by the National Capital Planning Commission on September 1, 2022.
Our Peace Corps Commemorative Foundation Advisory Board continues to expand, with an impressive coalition of former Peace Corps Directors, former members of Congress, and other distinguished Peace Corps community leaders now championing our mission with powerful voices.
Commemorative Featured in May WorldView
"A Walk in the Park," co-authored by Peace Corps Commemorative Foundation President Roger K. Lewis and Chief Advancement Officer Glenn A. Blumhorst, was just published in the Spring 2023 issue of WorldView magazine. It traces the history of Peace Corps Park – an initiative over 20 years in the making – from its Congressional charter, through the design concept proposals and approvals, to its envisioned impact. In upcoming editions of WorldView, we plan to share ideas we’ve received for the Peace Corps Park visitor experience, Peace Corps community stories related to the Park, and inspirational insights from the design artists.

Peace Corps Park Enters Final Design Phase
We are signing agreements with our design team, Larry Kirkland Studio and Michael Vergason Landscape Architects, so we can begin in June the final phase of Commemorative design and engineering for the artwork and site work for Peace Corps Park. The goal of this phase is to meet in November 2023 with the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts for final design approval, on track with our aim of breaking ground in 2024.
While design work proceeds, we will continue to pursue the remaining $8 million needed for the project, all of which is needed before breaking ground to cover the direct and indirect costs of construction as well as the federally required National Park Service maintenance endowment.
